Washington DC Internship at LCHR

About the Internship Program

Since 1978, the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights has worked in the U.S. and abroad to create a secure and humane world by advancing justice, human dignity and respect for the rule of law. We support human rights activists who fight for basic freedoms and peaceful change at the local level; protect refugees in flight from persecution and repression; promote fair economic practices by creating safeguards for workers' rights; and help build a strong international system of justice and accountability for the worst human rights crimes.

The Lawyers Committee welcomes a limited number of interns throughout the year. Positions are available in Program as well as Development, Communications, Administration and Finance. During the academic year, interns commit to 10 - 12 hours a week. During the summer most interns work full time. Often, when computers and workstations are fully committed, interns will work from their own laptops or off-site at libraries etc.

The unrestricted internships are open to students currently enrolled in, or recent graduates of, an undergraduate or graduate university. Law school students are encouraged to apply. Law and graduate school students can participate in research, writing projects, supporting Asylum case work, and an assortment of advocacy projects. Undergraduates work on administrative and clerical tasks as well as research and advocacy projects.

Most interns are able to find funding through their universities. LCHR competitive sources of funding are listed below.

The Frankel Fellowships

First and second year law students can compete for two $1000 grants funding one summer intern in our DC office and one in our NY office. The fellowships are given in memory of Marvin Frankel. Judge Frankel contributed in many important ways to the human rights movement. He was an active member of the Lawyers Committee’s Board for more than 24 years, serving as Chairman for 16 years. He traveled, on the Lawyers Committee’s behalf to many countries including the former Soviet Union, Argentina, the Philippines and Kenya. He participated actively in litigation challenging the U.S. government’s treatment of Haitian refugees. Through his leadership the Lawyers Committee developed a nationally recognized pro bono program through which lawyers in New York and Washington now represent more than 1000 asylum applicants from more than 80 countries. This is the largest program of its kind in the country. Judge Frankel’s colleagues at Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel, and members of his family and friends have provided funds to enable the Lawyers Committee to fund two Frankel interns beginning this summer. Each of the Frankel interns will work for 10 weeks in the Asylum Program. Duties will include organizing case material, participating in intake interviews and possible visits to a detention center. The fellows will also oversee the Frankel Lecture Series, helping to choose staff and guest speakers and topics for the summer brown bag lunch series. Interested students should apply for the fellowship to the LCHR Internship Coordinator (see below).

The Everett Internships

The Everett Foundation provides funding ($230 per week for 10 weeks) to two undergraduate or graduate summer interns. For details see www.everettinternships.org. LCHR Internship Coordinator (see below).
