Workers Rights: Companies Go Public With Rights Audits

Seven major shoe and clothing companies voluntarily released, and posted on the Internet, independent audits that examine working conditions in factories that produce their goods this week. The audits, which looked at a random sampling of factories in the supply chains of Nike, Reebok, Liz Claiborne and other global brands, were compiled by the Fair Labor Association, upon whose board LCHR sits. 9/11 Detainees: IG Report Confirms Abuses by Justice Department 
In the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, there were “significant problems” with the way the Justice Department rounded up and jailed hundreds of immigrants for months without charge, a new report from the Justice Department's Inspector General said this week. The report, which mentioned the Lawyers Committee’s work and reports on civil liberties, was particularly critical of the slow-moving process the department used to release those who were not considered threats. Congo: Fears of Genocide

More than 3 million people reportedly have died in the Congo since 1998. Right now the situation in the Eastern Congolese town of Ituri is particularly dire. Since the withdrawal of Ugandan troops from Ituri in the first weeks of May, attacks by armed militias against civilians have increased dramatically and international observers fear that without sustained and serious international intervention the Eastern Congo could turn into “another Rwanda.”

Zimbabwe: G8 Leaders Must Act

LCHR is urging world leaders to focus more time and energy on the escalating human rights crisis in Zimbabwe. President Robert Mugabe, who declared himself the winner of flawed elections held last year, has been using increasingly draconian measures to maintain his grip on power there. LCHR urged the G8 to address the situation at their June summit this week in France. More»

Military Commissions: Final Rules Provide No Real Right to Appeal
The Department of Defense released final rules this week that will dictate how military commissions designed to try suspected terrorists will operate. The rules fall far short of providing suspects fair trial guarantees.
