Chinese Dissidents, Zimbabwean Archbishop Win LCHR 2003 Human Rights Awards

At its 2003 Human Rights Awards on Thursday, October 23, the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights honored Xu Wenli, a Chinese democracy advocate who was imprisoned after calling for reform, and Archbishop Pius Ncube, an outspoken critic of the Zimbabwean government. LCHR also honored Wenli's daughter, Xu Jin, who helped advocate for her father's release from prison. Also honored that night were William D. Zabel, LCHR Board Chair, and Tom A. Bernstein, LCHR Board President, for extraordinary leadership in human rights.

Post 9/11 Report: Assessing the New Normal

Zimbabwe: Rights Lawyer Assaulted by Police

LCHR is urging a full, independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged beating by a policeman of Beatrice Mtetwa, a prominent human rights lawyer. Ms. Mtetwa was arrested on October 12 in Harare. She has represented several high-profile clients, including Andrew Meldrum, a journalist for The Guardian who was deported from Zimbabwe earlier this year. More»
