New LCHR Report Looks at Civil Liberties since 9/11

"A new normal" has set in since the terror attacks of 9/11, as Americans and their government adjust to living with the threat of future attacks. Ashraf Ibrahim, a 35-year-old political activist who has been critical of his government, will be tried by an Egyptian emergency court in December for allegedly “disseminating information abroad that is harmful to Egypt’s interests.” The obscure charge brought against Ibrahim - who is accused of having distributed information to international human rights organizations - echoes the case brought against Dr. Saad Eddin Ibrahim, another prominent Egyptian who stood up for human rights and was jailed as a result.

Workers Rights Group Receives $1.5 Million through Settlement of Nike Suit

A workers rights group the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights played a key role in starting was designated to receive $1.5 million as the result of a law suit settlement between Marc Kasky, a San Fransisco labor advocate, and Nike, Inc. The group, the Fair Labor Association, will use the money to expand its work monitoring the working conditions in overseas factories that produce for Nike and other leading shoe and clothing companies. “This settlement recognizes the key role this sort of monitoring can play in improving factory conditions for workers worldwide,” said Mike Posner, LCHR Executive Director and a board member of the FLA.
