LCHR Challenges Detention Without Charge of U.S. Citizen

The Lawyers Committee joined with a range of public policy organizations, retired federal judges, ex-government officials, and distinguished lawyers in submitting a series of legal briefs that challenge the Executive's authority to detain Jose Padilla, an American accused of plotting to detonate a "dirty bomb." Padilla has been held without charge and without access to legal counsel for more than a year. In addition to the Lawyers Committee, the briefs were signed by the Cato Institute, the Rutherford Institute, Judge Harold R. Tyler Jr. and LCHR Chairman William Zabel among others.

UN Moves Toward Holding Corporations Accountable for Rights Violations

A United Nations subcommittee agreed last week to a set of basic standards that lay out companies' obligations to uphold human and labor rights under international law.
