Defending Labor Activists in Singapore

On the surface, Singapore seems to be an attractive destination for foreign investment. For instance, multinationals account for more than 90 percent of investments in the manufacturing sector. Singapore’s Constitution also compares favorably with others around the world in its protection of basic freedoms of speech, association and assembly. However, a raft of draconian laws are used to obstruct those who criticize or question government policy, in the press, in government and among activists. For example, the threat of incarceration remains a constant obstacle to those advocating for fair conditions of labor and for democratic reform in Singapore.
