Lawyers Committee’s Refugee
Program
Advancing the Rights of Refugees
Protecting the human rights of refugees, both internationally and
here in the United States, has been an integral part of the work
of the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights since its inception. The
Lawyers Committee grounds its work on refugee protection in the
international standards of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status
of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol and other international human
rights instruments.
Through our U.S. Asylum Program,
we are committed to advancing the rights of refugees in the United
States. We achieve this objective by winning asylum for individual
refugees through our
Pro Bono work, by ensuring access to asylum,
by advocating for fair asylum procedures and by pressing for U.S.
compliance with international refugee and human rights law. To learn
more about our efforts to secure reform of U.S. laws governing asylum
and to support these reforms, join our Torchlight
Campaign.
Through our International
Refugee Program, we work to monitor the standard
of refugee protection accorded by national and international institutions
and organizations, to contribute to the development of enhanced
legal mechanisms and practices in order to more effectively tackle
new protection challenges, and to work with local and international
non-governmental organizations to strengthen regional and institutional
capacity to address refugee protection concerns.
