The Lawyers Committee Mourns Senator Daniel
Patrick Moynihan
The Lawyers Committee for Human Rights mourns the passing
of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, a champion of human rights and
justice.
“Senator Moynihan’s courageous voice was heard advocating
for justice on some of the most pressing social issues of our time,”
said Michael Posner, the Executive Director of the Lawyers Committee
for Human Rights. Senator Moynihan actively advocated on human rights
issues in countries ranging from Tibet to Northern Ireland. In his
role as an elected official he fought for U.S. support for labor treaties,
fair trade agreements, and democratization.
Senator Moynihan’s relationship with the Lawyers Committee was
an invaluable one - the Senator was particularly instrumental
in working with the Lawyers Committee in the case of the 1980 murder
of four churchwomen in El Salvador finally brought to trial in 2000.
Senator Moynihan saw clearly the human element of the case, meeting
with the families of the women who were killed, while simultaneously
understanding the critical issues of open government involved. He
pushed for the public release of documents related to the case and
appealed to public officials for their help.
Senator Moynihan spoke out on issues that were controversial, and
wasn’t afraid to speak words others might not want to hear.
He spoke loudly in support of the Kurds in the early ‘90s; he
spoke out against political assassinations; he spoke out in support
of Nepal’s transition to democracy; he spoke out on all issues
where he saw a lack of justice. His bold voice will be sorely missed.
