Refugees in Europe

Although Europe hosts fewer refugees than other regions (about 860,000 compared with 3 million in Africa and 5 million in the Middle East), its policies have a broad global impact. Since the end of the Cold War governments throughout Europe as well as in the United States and Australia have been setting a global agenda which is shrinking the space available to refugees.

The International Refugee Program is committed to monitoring developments in Europe, particularly relating to key issues such as security how policy making in Europe impacts on refugee protection in Africa.
